Kindness named Oxford Children’s Word of the Year, echoing Wells’ core values
The announcement of “kindness” as the Oxford Children’s Word of the Year 2024 by Oxford University Press has struck a chord with our community, where the values of Creativity, Aspiration, Responsibility and Endeavour – spelling out the word CARE – form the foundation of our School ethos. Kindness has long been a guiding principle at Wells, underpinning the community spirit and shaping the experiences of our pupils. The word being chosen by children nationally highlights the importance of fostering compassion and mutual support and reinforces why it is given so much emphasis at Wells.
Head Master Mr Tighe has often stressed the central role kindness plays at Wells. Reflecting on its significance, he has said, “Perhaps most importantly of all, underpinning all that we do here is what to my mind must be a bottom-line for everyone in our community: that we are kind to each other. I want our pupils to look after each other, to look out for each other, and to help each other. I want pupils here to be happy and successful – but in that order.” Mr Tighe’s words capture the School’s commitment to ensuring that kindness is not only encouraged but ingrained in every aspect of life at Wells, creating a nurturing environment where happiness and success go hand in hand.
