Promenade Concerts WCS Wells Cathedral School Independent Prep Somerset England

Promenade Concerts

Promenade season is always extremely special. The chairs in the body of the Cathedral are removed, the lighting is specifically arranged and the atmosphere is a magical one. Music can appear all over the building and the audience can follow the sound, or sit or stand and appreciate from a distance.

The concerts this year were as wonderful as one would expect from our exceptional young musicians, and every year there is something new to appreciate. From the high gallery above the West Door came sounds of solo jazz trumpet in the first Prom and in the third we had a pair of bagpipers; the pipes were especially moving when they performed ‘Highland Cathedral’ in such an apt space.

The first Prom was led by the Brass and Percussion Departments. There is something extraordinarily beautiful about the notes of a solo marimba echoing around the magnificent Cathedral. The horns were bold and majestic in the Dambusters and it was lovely to see trumpeters from Year 6 to Upper Sixth performing fantastically together.

The second concert was this year’s Early Music Prom. Three different harpsichords were played in this concert. It was surprising and wonderful to hear a duet for recorder and sackbut (a Baroque trombone) and two of our young School organists performed on the Cathedral Organ. The conclusion was a performance of the 2nd Orchestral Suite by Bach which finished with a joyful Badinerie (famous as one of the Nokia ringtones).

The final Promenade was the Woodwind and Strings Prom. Creative collaborations were everywhere. Chamber performances of harp and flute; harp, oboe and strings; Mozart flute quartet and Mozart clarinet quintet all sparkled. Killar’s Orawa for Strings finished the concert and the season in a brilliantly effective way.
