Spotlight on Tilly M: Balancing International Hockey and Leadership at Wells
Lower Sixth pupil and incoming Deputy Head of School, Tilly M, has been making headlines both on and off the Hockey pitch – most recently with her selection to represent Wales at U18 level. Her journey to international honours is one of passion, perseverance, and a deep-rooted love for the sport.
Tilly’s Hockey story began humbly on the tarmac playground of her local primary school in Year 3. It wasn’t until she joined Wells Cathedral School in Year 6, with facilities she describes as excellent, that her interest truly took flight. Since then, her path has included club Hockey with Firebrands and, ultimately, international representation with Wales.
“The moment I found out I’d made the final squad for Wales U18 was incredible,” she recalls. “It felt like all the hard work had paid off. I was so proud.”
But Tilly’s achievements don’t stop at sport. As one of our new Deputy Heads of School, she will play a vital role in pupil leadership – a responsibility she’s confident she can balance through meticulous organisation.
“I plan everything in advance – whether that’s homework or meetings – so I can focus fully on training when I need to,” she explains.
Wells: A Catalyst for Growth
Tilly credits Wells Cathedral School for much of her development, both as an athlete and a leader.
“Wells has been integral. Through regular games lessons and extra sessions, I was able to catch up with others who had been playing much longer. The coaches here have been fantastic.”
One standout figure in her journey is Mr Mayes, Head of Hockey, who has coached her for six years.
“He’s been crucial to my improvement – both on the pitch and as a mentor off it,” she says.
She also acknowledges support from teachers like Mr Scott (strength and conditioning), Mrs Pritchard (mentorship), and Miss Burgess (organisation and encouragement).
A typical day in Tilly’s life at Wells is a careful blend of academic and athletic focus: three lessons a day, gym sessions or homework during study periods, afternoon games twice a week, and evening training in Bristol – often not getting home until 10pm.
Mindset and Motivation
When pressure builds, Tilly relies on setting small, realistic goals to stay consistent. “It’s about focusing on the smaller picture,” she shares. Self-doubt has been a challenge, but she’s learned to avoid comparisons: “Focusing on myself and my own game has been far more productive.”
Her favourite part of international Hockey? “Creating special memories with my closest friends. Playing for your country is amazing – but sharing that experience makes it even better.”
Leading On and Off the Pitch
For Tilly, being Deputy Head of School is a long-held ambition.
“I always looked up to the pupils in those roles – now it’s an honour to be one of them.”
Playing elite sport has undoubtedly shaped her leadership style. “I feel confident supporting others, especially in sport, and I understand how vital communication is – both speaking and listening. That’s something I’ll bring into my leadership role at School.”
Team values from Hockey also make their way into her School life. “Respect and trust are key. Listening properly helps teams work well together – whether on the field or in School.”
Wearing the Welsh Jersey
Tilly lights up when describing the atmosphere of international matches. “Especially in Cardiff – with friends and family cheering us on. It’s a mix of nerves and excitement, but once the game starts, it’s just pure joy.”
A standout moment? “My first match for Wales against Canada. Having my whole family there made it unforgettable.”
What makes Welsh hockey unique? “The camaraderie. The friendships off the pitch carry through into how we play. That spirit makes the team so special.”
Looking Forward
Over the next year, Tilly hopes to lead the School Hockey team with pride, continue her National League commitments with Firebrands, and prepare herself physically for future Wales training camps. Long-term, she plans to continue Hockey at university and dreams of one day playing for the senior Welsh team.
Her advice for younger pupils is simple and powerful: “Don’t compare yourself to others. Focus on your goals – that mindset has helped me massively.”
