Choristers mark Holy Week and Easter with music and tradition
As the rest of the School headed off for the Easter holidays, the Choristers began a busy week of services as part of the Cathedral’s observance of Holy Week and Easter.
Beginning with the Palm Sunday Eucharist, the Choir sang outside the West Front, a tradition that goes back hundreds of years, this year documented on ITV news as part of their Holy Week coverage. After a few days off, the Choristers returned on Maundy Thursday, with a full schedule of rehearsals and services marking the Last Supper on Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and the Easter Vigil on Holy Saturday. There was time for the Seniors to enjoy a meal out at Fosso Lounge in Wells to spend some downtime together with plenty of burgers and fries! Easter Day itself saw the Choristers sing three services, with Matins at 9.30am (music by Howells, Stanford & Wesley) and Eucharist at 11am (Langlais’s Messe Solennelle and Tavener’s Dum Transisset). There was then a chance for the whole Chorister community to get together for a bring and share lunch, organised by the Chorister Parents Social Committee, before rounding the day off with Evensong at 3pm, including a joyful performance of Handel’s Hallelujah Chorus. With Easter truly sung in, it was time for a break – before assembling two days later for the Choir Tour to Italy!
