Wigmore Hall concert

The Brass Department were delighted to have been invited to perform at the Wigmore Hall, London’s prestigious chamber music venue, as part of the British Brass Chamber Music Day on Saturday 25th April. The brass quintet performed a world-premiere commission by OW composer Eva Donoghue followed by Jan Koetsier’s demanding three-movement Quintet for Brass. The large audience, including some internationally renowned musicians thoroughly enjoyed the performance given by Cole C, Milo B, Zoë, Morgan B and Lily S, all of whom were brilliant ambassadors for Music at Wells.

In the words of our Director of Music, Alex Laing:

It was a genuine pleasure to be in Wigmore Hall to hear our Senior Brass Quintet perform as part of a celebration of brass chamber music, alongside excellent groups from the Royal College of Music and Purcell School.

Our quintet rose to the occasion superbly. Their performance had real assurance and musicality, not least in their compelling account of a quintet by OW Eva Donoghue, which brought freshness and individuality to the programme. In front of a strong and appreciative audience, they demonstrated a level of playing that truly stood out across the evening.

Many thanks to Head of Brass, Ross Brown, for making the visit possible and for his work in preparing the group so beautifully. It was a terrific occasion, and a real joy to witness.

Broadcaster Catherine Bott was in the audience and singled out the Wells ensemble for its quality.
