Only at Wells
Only at Wells could pupils perform Vespers (Monteverdi) alongside the Monteverdi String Band and the English Cornett and Sackbut Ensemble, all within the magnificent setting of Wells Cathedral.
Our String players learning the art of Renaissance and Baroque ornamentation from the very best in the field. Our Brass players bringing extraordinary sensitivity to their role, with real textural delicacy when accompanying and thrilling power when required. All of it shaped and elevated by the unique resonance of the Cathedral.
The performance of the Vespers was interspersed with moments for our School consorts, each one delivered with poise, imagination, and a level of musicianship that was genuinely astonishing. It feels unfair to pick out a particular moment… but the trio involving Ted L (Recorder, Year 8) and Morgan B (Sackbut, Upper Sixth) was one that will be long remembered for its quality and style.
It was heartwarming to see and hear so many OWs performing in one of the highest quality collaborative concerts.
And then moments like this: a photograph of our own sackbut players standing shoulder to shoulder with members of the English Cornett and Sackbut Ensemble. A vivid, tangible reminder of what makes this place so special, where pupils do not simply observe excellence, but participate in it, learning directly from it.
To say it again: there is nowhere else in the country where this would have been possible.
