Kingfisher Common
This Term has been another fantastic one for the Kingfisher Common volunteering group, who travel down to the fields in Wookey every Wednesday during activities to support this inspiring biodiversity restoration project. Pupils have embraced a wide variety of hands-on conservation work, including clearing a fallen tree, planting a replacement tree, and helping to dig out and remove heavily overgrown weed membrane from the willow patch.
Last week, the group also enjoyed a special visit from Barbra Lakin, Biodiversity Officer for Somerset Council. Together, pupils carried out a tree survey, with exciting results: one tree was identified for inclusion on the Veteran Tree Register and another qualified for the Ancient Tree Register.
Dr Mitchell, Head of Academic Enrichment and Biology teacher, commented, “The whole group has been a joy to work with throughout the Term, enthusiastically embracing time outdoors, some rewarding physical labour, and the opportunity to contribute meaningfully to an important long-term project transforming former farmland into a thriving biodiversity zone.”
