U18 Johnny Wilkinson Cup winners

On Saturday 8th November, the Rugby 1stXV travelled to Rendcombe College to take part in the U18 Johnny Wilkinson Cup. The competition was made up of 10 schools, split into two groups of 5.

The team made a very strong start with victories in their first group matches. With the top two teams from each in the group securing a semi-final place, we headed into our final group much hoping to secure top spot. This was a tough match which saw a narrow defeat meaning a second place finish in the group. After lunch we prepared for a tough semi-final against the school who finished top of group A. In another tough encounter the team showed character, togetherness and courage to earn a hard fought victory and secure a place in the final. Reaching the final gave us an opportunity to play the same school that had beaten us earlier in the group stages. We started the match with great physicality and hard running lines which allowed us to race into a half time lead. The second half saw our opponents rally, but the fighting spirit, resilience and teamwork of our 1stXV players meant we held strong, earning a victory to take home the trophy and be crowned champions.

Mr Meehan, Head of Rugby, commented: “I could not be prouder of the team after today’s tournament. The heart, desire and team spirit really shone through, with every player contributing fully to the team’s success. We are excited to return to the Johnny Wilkinson Cup next year as defending champions.”
