IICSA AND WELLS CATHEDRAL SCHOOL

The Independent Inquiry into Child Sexual Abuse (IICSA) is undertaking scrutiny of past and current safeguarding practices in a large variety of institutions which care for children.

Residential Schools were examined by the Inquiry, and Phase One hearings took place in September 2019 and October 2019. This phase of the Residential Schools Inquiry focussed on, among other things, Specialist Music Schools, and Wells Cathedral School, along with the three other English Specialist Music Schools, was requested by IICSA to contribute to this.

The School was committed to co-operating fully and openly with the Inquiry from the outset and we were therefore pleased that our application to be a Core Participant of the Inquiry was granted. The safeguarding of children in our care is our highest priority at Wells Cathedral School, and we therefore welcomed this opportunity to engage with the Inquiry.

The Inquiry published its report on 1 March 2022. Our statement in response can be found here.

We already implement many of the recommendations from the Inquiry, but we look forward to continuing our work to further enhance our safeguarding provision, and that of all Residential Schools, in the future.

If any former or current pupils, or parents, or others associated with the School wish to contact the School about any historic or current matters related to safeguarding, please either contact the Main School Reception on 01749 834204, or the School’s Designated Safeguarding Lead (Mr Martin Ashton) on 01749 834222, or the Head Master (Mr Alastair Tighe) on 01749 834212. Contact is also available via email at either [email protected] or [email protected]
