IS WELLS A MUSIC SCHOOL?

Wells is unique; it is the only school in the UK that offers both
  • an all-round education that prepares pupils for a successful future at university, college and/or the world beyond education as well as
  • a bespoke Specialist Music education for musicians who aspire to have a career in music (NB a successful music audition is required for entry into our Specialist Music School).
So, whilst a Specialist Music School option is available for talented young musicians, many of our pupils are not part of this Specialist programme and choose to play music as a hobby, if at all. However, everyone across the School benefits from this unique dynamic and all pupils at Wells are encouraged and supported to nurture their talents and passions, whatever they may be. We work closely with our pupils and their parents to meet their individual needs, dream big and achieve their aspirations.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to play an instrument or like music to fit in at Wells?

No. Many of our pupils do not wish to play music and choose to focus their pursuits on our other opportunities instead. We offer a wide range of sports, drama, art, outdoor learning, academic options, clubs and societies so everyone is sure to find something that they are passionate about. All pupils are encouraged to try new experiences, and we often find that they discover new talents and skills whilst at Wells.

Will I be able to further my music at Wells if I am not a Specialist but just enjoy playing as a hobby?

Yes. Everyone can make the most of our world-class music staff, facilities and opportunities to develop their musical skills and interests. We have ensembles aimed at all abilities and offer General Music Scholarships (subject to a successful application and audition) for those who aren’t part of our Specialist programme.

As a Specialist Musician, will I take part in other activities besides music?

Yes. We work closely with you and your parents to create a tailored programme to suit your circumstances, aspirations and overall wellbeing. It is a delicate balance, but we will ensure the level of instrumental practice, rehearsals, performances, masterclasses, academic subjects and other activities is right for you – though all Specialists are expected to be committed and dedicated.

As a Specialist Musician, what are the benefits to studying music at Wells instead of at a Specialist Music School that doesn't offer education to pupils who are not musicians?

Like all of the Specialist Music Schools, we offer the world-class training, teaching and facilities aspiring professional musicians need to succeed. However, Specialists at Wells also benefit from a wider range of academic subjects and co-curricular activities, and they can make friends at school who aren’t musicians, which provides some balance and prevents a ‘hot-house’ type effect. This extra dimension helps our pupils become more resilient and rounded as they encounter the challenges faced by professional musicians. This is all provided in a beautiful, stimulating, family-orientated, and safe environment.

If you would like to find out more about life as a Specialist, we recommend that you register for one of our Be a Specialist Musician for a Day events.
