GENERAL MUSIC SCHOLARSHIPS

Every year we award a number of Scholarships to recognise current talent and potential in a wide variety of fields. In addition to a financial award, our Scholars receive enhanced educational opportunities and privileges to help them develop their talents. Watch the video to find out more about our General Music Scholarships and to hear from a Scholar….

Criteria

For entry at Years 7, 9, 10 and Lower Sixth (NB Year 10 is only applicable for external candidates)

We offer two pathways for talented musicians. This, our General Music Scholar Pathway, is for someone looking to pursue music alongside their academic programme as opposed to one of our Specialist Music Programmes, which are for musicians looking to make music their primary focus.

Overview

Our General Music Scholars take their instrumental lessons in school with our highly respected team of visiting music staff (lesson fees can be found here). Like our Specialists, they have access to ensembles, orchestras, accompanists and our exceptional facilities. However, unlike our Specialists, our General Musicians pursue a full academic timetable and typically progress to university to study an academic discipline. Click here for more details on which path is right for you.

What to expect on the Scholarship Day

  • An interview with their Head of Year or a member of our Senior Management Team
  • A group activity
  • A one-to-one interview with our Deputy Director of Music to include a performance of their two contrasting pieces
  • Should any candidate require accompaniment for their performance please submit a copy of the accompaniment via email to [email protected] by the published deadline (please see the checklist on our Scholarship Application Process page for details)

Financial awards

Scholarship awards are based on current merit. All successful Year 7 applicants and most other successful applicants will be awarded a maximum of 10% of their day fees. However, we do award a finite number of scholarships worth up to 50% of day fees for truly exceptional candidates, which will be awarded solely at our discretion.

We may be able to supplement a scholarship with further financial assistance based on your family’s needs – please see our Bursaries page and our Remissions Policy for details.

Review process

Scholars may audition to transfer to one of our specialist programmes if they achieve a suitable standard and desire to do so.
