NYO Basses and Bernstein

17 year old Wells bassist Alex, a member of the NYO since September, has recently performed two performances of Leonard Bernstein’s Mass at London’s Festival Hall conducted by Marin Alsop.

Mass is Bernstein’s huge oratorio about society and how people live together. The NYO formed an orchestra in collaboration with Chineke! Foundation, which included some musicians from NYO Inspire, and confirmed Bernstein’s belief that music can communicate and shine a light on how we live together, and give incredible musical experiences.

Alexander has written that working with Marin Alsop is “breathtakingly amazing. The way she conducts reminds him of Bernstein conducting. The actors are so amazing that it’s slightly chilling. The really great actors were literally crying during the intense bits. Complete run-through on Tuesday was spectacular.”
