Brian Poxon Head of RPE elected on ISRSA Council WCS Wells Cathedral School Independent Prep Somerset England

Head of RPE elected on ISRSA Council

Mr Poxon, Head of Religion, Philosophy and Ethics, has been nominated onto the National Council of the Independent Schools Religious Studies Association (ISRSA).

The ISRSA champions Religious Studies, Theology and Philosophy by supporting and representing teachers, hosting conferences and conducting subject research.

The Association is governed by a Council of twelve elected members and three co-opted members and meets at least three times per year. Having been elected, Mr Poxon will serve a three-year term, after which he can be re-elected if proposed by one member of the Association and seconded by another. In his role, he must uphold the standards of the teaching profession and ensure the Association and our School remain in good repute.

Having taught Religion, Philosophy and Ethics (RPE) for nearly 25 years in both the UK and Australia, as well as publishing multiple A level revision guides, Mr Poxon expressed his interest in the continuing importance of teaching religious literacy when this is not always possible to gain from presentations of religions, which are often misrepresented in the media.

He explained, “The ISRSA strives to support excellence in both resourcing and the teaching of the subject, keeping RPE in a central place in the curriculum, not just because of the inherently valuable content, but because of the preparation it gives to pupils for life in a multi-religious world. Understanding people for whom religion offers a central shaping framework for life is important, even if that is not the case for oneself. My nomination means that I can contribute to this conversation.

Mr Poxon is delighted to be representing Wells in order to sharpen the School’s RPE Department’s practice with cutting-edge insights from across the UK, and looks forward to being part of the working party drawing up definitive plans to keep religious education relevant, representative and rigorous in the 21st Century.
