Cricket Week 2023 WCS Wells Cathedral School Independent Prep Somerset England

Cricket Week

In glorious sunshine, the School once again hosted the ever popular annual Cricket Week. Kickstarting the week with a game against the MCC, the Boys’ First XI got off to a strong start, beating the MCC’s 249-6 by scoring 250 with three wickets in hand. Samuel Trotman (Lower Sixth) collected a five-for with Alex Scott and Dougie Sharp (Lower Sixth) batting impressively, scoring 60 and 52, respectively. You can watch video footage of the game here and here.

On Tuesday, the Boys’ First XI took on the Almeley CC touring side (you can watch video footage of the game here and here). The opposition scored 254 from their 45 overs, leaving Wells to put on a fantastic chase led by Dougie hitting 101* with support from Samuel on 64 and Alex on 46. The Boys’ U14A were also in action, playing their first ever declaration game against Stonar School. Having successfully restricted Stonar to 184, with Ethan D’Ovidio (Year 9) taking a five-for, the chase came down to the final over of the game. With all three results possible in the final six balls, the opposition ultimately came out on top by four runs.

On Wednesday the Sports Department hosted a Kwik Cricket Festival with three local primary schools with help from a number of Sixth Formers, as well as a staff vs pupils game which, much to their delight, the pupils won in the final over! Harrison Ashwell (Year 10) and Alex both hit half centuries. Millfield School made the journey over to face our Girls’ First XI in a really enjoyable afternoon of Cricket on Thursday, in which they did brilliantly taking wickets and scoring runs.

The XL Club came to Cedars Field for a fantastic game on Friday. A great effort with the ball left the Boys’ First XI the task of chasing 211, which they took on in earnest. Dougie and Alex each hit 46, and the game was looking like a certain draw until Paul Kemp-King (Year 10) came to the crease and hit a destructive 72*. This left Wells needing three runs from the final ball, but despite their best efforts the boys ran two, finishing the game with a draw. It was a nail-biting end to a brilliant game with valuable contributions throughout.

On Saturday the School held a block fixture against Warminster School. The U12A, U13A, U13B, U14A, U15A and Boys’ First XI each took to the field in an excellent set of fixtures. Highlights included William Sharp (Year 7) taking two wickets, Joshua Baker (Year 9) scoring 50 and an agonising 99 for Dougie. It was a great day of sport with lots of competitive Cricket on show! You can watch video footage of the U13A game here.

Cricket Week culminated on Sunday with the Boys’ First XI playing a fixture against an Old Wellensian team. At the end of a long and busy week of Cricket in the sun the boys gave one more huge push. At the toss, the Old Wellies called it correctly and chose to bat first, batting well and putting on a large total of 261-4 against the tired Wells boys. Despite their fatigue, the boys had a confident mindset and felt they had every chance of chasing it down. Another extremely close game came down to the final over, but their efforts were rewarded with a one wicket win! After his 99 the day before, Dougie once again become a centurion, leading the team to victory with 128* – meaning he scored over 400 runs across the week! Oliver Scott (Year 10) provided plenty of support at the other end with a valuable contribution of 65. The incredible win was well deserved and the perfect way to end the week.

We’d like to thank the Sports Department and the Estates team for their phenomenal efforts in putting on this week which is so enjoyed by pupils and staff alike.
