Music masterclasses at Wells Cathedral School WCS an independent prep in Somerset England

Music masterclasses

On Thursday 15th June we were very fortunate to welcome recorder player and improviser Robert de Bree for a day of masterclasses and workshops. Robert worked individually with all of our recorder players and also gave a class for all wind players. Robert performs internationally and teaches improvisation at the Royal Conservatoire of The Hague. Mr Leaker, Co-ordinator of Woodwind Studies, commented; “Robert is an early music expert but also offers a unique insight into creative music making that is inspiring for all of our young musicians.”

Canadian pianist Angela Hewitt, pictured with Lucille Raynal (Year 9), Yannick Fiss and Rufina Lok (Lower Sixth), closed this year’s international piano masterclass series with a wonderful recital in Cedars Hall and an inspiring class for our specialist pianists. Previous visitors this season have included Dmitri Alexeev (Russia), Ruth Gerald (Australia), Steven Osborne (Scotland), Kyoko Hashimoto (Canada) and from the UK conservatoires: Vanessa Latarche, Head of Keyboard, Royal College of Music, Graham Scott, Head of Keyboard, Royal Northern College of Music and Christopher Elton, Emeritus Head of Keyboard, Royal Academy of Music.

On 11th May we were delighted to host a flute masterclass with Sarah Newbold. Sarah’s teaching and performing experience is prolific having played with every major orchestra in the UK and holding current teaching positions at the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama and the Guildhall School of Music & Drama. Sarah’s class focussed on performance, breathing and body mapping and her insightful comments were invaluable to our specialist flautists.
