Double Reed Extravaganza WCS Wells Cathedral School Independent Prep Somerset England

Double Reed Extravaganza

On Sunday 8th October we welcomed over 80 oboists and bassoonists into Cedars Hall for the Double Reed Extravaganza.

The concept for the day was to rehearse and perform a new educational piece written by composer Teresa Barlow especially for the day and as the first of a series of ‘Mini to Mighty’ pieces that feature players from complete beginner through to professional level. Tutors included our own Pete Harrison and Liz Fyfe alongside OWs Ashby Mayes, Ella York and Poppy Webb-Taylor. It was a particular pleasure to see our former pupils coming full circle to teach and perform as visiting masters.

We also welcomed 14 pupils from the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama with their teacher, Steve Hudson, Principal Oboe of the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, who gave a masterclass to advanced pupils.

As well as benefiting pupils, the day also provided a very welcome networking opportunity for teachers and professionals from across the South of England, who met and discussed all things oboe and bassoon.

Our thanks to woodwind specialists John Packer Ltd, who supported the day with a full stand of instruments and accessories for pupils to try.
