Choristers finish Michaelmas Term on a high note

It has been a busy end to the Michaelmas Term for our Choristers.

From 6th to 8th October,
Wells was the venue for the Cathedral Music Trust‘s National Gathering, with members coming from all over the country to celebrate everything about Cathedral music. The weekend opened with a fundraising concert for the Wells Cathedral Chorister Trustin which Iestyn Davies MBE – renowned British countertenor, an Old Wellensian and a Patron of the Wells Cathedral Chorister Trust – accompanied by Joseph Middleton on piano, performed Schubert’s song cycle Die schöne Müllerin in Cedars Hall. After the interval, Alexander Hamilton (Acting Director of Music at the Cathedral) directed Iestyn along with soprano (and Wells Cathedral School vocal teacher) Elizabeth Donovan and the Choristers for excerpts from Benjamin Britten’s opera A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

Then, on Monday 16th October, the Senior Choristers were delighted to meet and sing for Their Royal Highnesses The Duke and Duchess of Gloucester (our thanks to David Bevan for the lovely photograph). With rousing music by Howells and Walton, Evensong provided a fitting conclusion to the Duke and Duchess’ visit to
Wells.

After a very full first Term, the Choristers break for a well-deserved October half Term holiday, before returning for what promises to be a busy lead up to Christmas.
