Wells remembers WCS Wells Cathedral School Independent Prep Somerset England

Wells remembers

Across the School, Armistice Day and Remembrance Sunday were marked on 10th-13th November.

Pupils in the Prep School attended a Remembrance Service in Cedars Hall last Friday, with Mimi Ashton (Year 7) performing The Last Post ahead of Charlie Ballamy (Lower Sixth) sounding it on Cedars Lawn at 11am on the 11th to remember the fallen of the two World Wars and subsequent conflicts, followed by a two minute silence. The School held a Remembrance Service in the Cathedral at 6.30pm on Sunday, during which the Head Master gave an address, the Chapel Choir sang, poems were read in English, German and French, and the Old Wellensian Roll of Honour was read out. In addition, the Choristers and the School’s Chamber Choir were part of a devotional performance of Maurice Duruflé’s Requiem in the Cathedral on Remembrance Sunday, during which Harry Jordan (Lower Sixth) performed on cello for the hauntingly beautiful ‘Pie Jesu’ movement, culminating in the now familiar and much appreciated ‘poppy drop’. The CCF were also part of the City of Wells Remembrance commemoration and parade that morning.

We were also pleased that the School was represented at both the Festival of Remembrance in the Royal Albert Hall with the School’s Patron King Charles III in attendance on Saturday, and also the march past the Cenotaph in London on Sunday. CCF Navy cadets Sophie Jackson (Year 11), Phoebe Hillman (Lower Sixth), Archie Spindler and Peter Baller (Upper Sixth) all travelled to London to be part of these important national events.

We would like to thank the number of pupils who performed The Last Post throughout the community; Cole Craggs (Year 9) in the Wells Town Hall on Armistice Day, and on Remembrance Sunday; Emma Lane (Lower Sixth) in Wells Cathedral, Reuben Ashton (Year 11) in Doulting, Poppy Webber (Year 10) in Mells, Henry Leung (Lower Sixth) in Meare, Milo Brown (Year 10) in Wookey Hole, Cole Craggs (Year 9) in East Pennard, Joshua Knott (Year 11) in Coxley, Charlie Ballamy (Lower Sixth) in Maiden Bradley, Francesca Hawks (Lower Sixth) in St. Cuthbert’s Church, Wells, and at the School’s boarders’ service. We are also grateful to Charlie Ballamy (Lower Sixth) for his performance at the Senior School assembly on Monday morning.
