St John Passion WCS Wells Cathedral School Independent Prep Somerset England

St John Passion

On Saturday 11th May, the Cathedral Choir, with stellar soloists Kieran White OW (2008) (Evangelist) and Neal Davies (Christus), accompanied by baroque ensemble Réjouissance, gave an absolutely outstanding performance of J.S. Bach’s 1724 ‘St John Passion’ in its 300th anniversary year.

Head and Deputy Head Choristers Petra and Estella (Year 9) brilliantly delivered the two soprano arias Ich folge dir and Zerfließe, mein Herze with masterful control and character. William Drakett and Alex Jenkins, both Vicars Choral and Wells staff members, also gave superb performances of the bass and tenor arias.

Mr Wells, Head of the Prep School, commented:

Following a week of outstanding music and events that formed this year’s Sound of Wells Festival, there surely could be no better finale than Saturday’s simply captivating performance of Bach’s immortal ‘St John Passion’, that left us all spellbound. The harmony between the choir and orchestra was a joy to behold as they delivered a performance brimming with conviction and fervour. The solos by Petra (Year 9), Estella (Year 9), and Thomas (Year 8) were nothing short of astounding. They exuded a maturity beyond their years and I am sure served as inspiring role models for their younger peers. Undoubtedly I am sure it will be an evening that will linger in their and our memories for years to come.”
