Niall Mellis memorial Rugby match WCS Wells Cathedral School Independent Prep Somerset England

Niall Mellis memorial Rugby match

This year’s Rugby officially began on Friday 6th September as our Senior 1st XV played their annual fixture against Wells Rugby Club. This event holds special meaning for both our School and Wells RFC, who play each year to fondly remember Old Wellensian, Niall Mellis. Niall was a pupil at Wells Cathedral School and a member of Wells RFC who sadly lost his battle with cancer during his final year at School in 2013. Rugby was a great passion of Niall’s, and we are honoured to be joined by his family and friends each year to remember him.

This year’s match was very tightly contested in challenging conditions. However, it was Wells Cathedral School who made the most of the early exchanges, with two well worked tries to take a 12-0 lead. The weather worsened as the first half progressed and this allowed Wells RFC to tighten their game and effectively use their strong pack to bring the score back to 12-12 at half time. The second half was a real arm wrestle between the teams, but it was Wells RFC who eventually secured a 17-12 victory.

Mr Meehan, Head of Rugby, commented, “Friday’s game was a really special event for our community. It was wonderful to reconnect with Niall’s family and friends, who would like to express their sincere thanks to everyone who came to show their support. I am incredibly proud of the determination and spirit shown by our Senior 1st XV, who honoured Niall’s memory with a very spirited performance.”
