Cricket Week
Cricket Week 2026 certainly lived up to expectations! Across eight days, 18 matches were played, with more than 80 pupils representing the School in at least one fixture. There were plenty of memorable team performances, some outstanding individual achievements, and near-perfect Cricket weather before the heatwave arrived.
The week began on Monday with the 1st XI taking on the prestigious MCC, though the team didn’t produce their best cricket and were comfortably beaten by a strong opposition, then Tuesday saw Almeley CC visit for the first home fixture of the week. Batting first, the 1st XI posted an impressive 274 from their 40 overs. Captain Oliver S (Lower Sixth) scored his maiden century, while Finley S-I (Year 11) and Archie S (Lower Sixth) both claimed three wickets as the team secured a commanding 167 run victory.
Wednesday belonged to our younger teams, with four fixtures against The Downs. At home, the U13A boys were narrowly defeated, but the U12A side enjoyed a convincing win. Seb B (Year 7) and Rupert B (Year 7) both produced excellent half centuries. Away from home, both the U13A and U13B girls’ teams battled hard but were beaten in challenging, rain-affected conditions.
On Thursday, the 1st XI girls were involved in a thrilling contest against Warminster. Liv D (Year 9) top-scored with an unbeaten 20, while Maisie W (Year 11) and Ellie F (Year 11) each took two wickets. Despite a spirited performance, the team fell just three wickets short of victory.
After a brief break, the 1st XI returned to action on Friday against the Forty Club. Ethan D (Lower Sixth) became the second player of the week to earn a place on the honours board, scoring a superb century. Josh B (Lower Sixth) then led the bowling effort with figures of 3-33 as the team recorded an emphatic 110 run win.
Saturday brought one of the highlights of the week as the 1st XI welcomed back our alumni, the Old Wellensians. Chasing 242 in a superb contest, the team came agonisingly close before falling just two runs short. Elsewhere, the U15A side were beaten by Downside in a low-scoring match, while at Blundell’s the U13B boys fought hard despite defeat and the U12A team recorded another comfortable victory, helped by Tommy L’s (Year 7) excellent half century. The U13A and U13B girls also travelled to Blundell’s, with both sides narrowly missing out after competitive performances.
The week concluded with the 1st XI competing in the Cathedral Schools T20 Festival, hosted this year by The King’s School Gloucester. Reaching the final for the third consecutive year was a remarkable achievement, although, for the third year running, the team were unfortunately unable to get over the final hurdle. Despite the disappointment, the tournament featured some outstanding performances, including half centuries from Rory S (Lower Sixth) and Zak M (Year 11), as well as a devastating unbeaten 86 from Paul KK (Lower Sixth). The squad showed tremendous resilience throughout the competition, performing admirably in hot conditions at the end of a demanding week while managing both fatigue and injuries.
Congratulations to all players who represented the School during Cricket Week. Finally, a huge thank you must go to the coaches, Grounds team, umpires and Catering staff, whose hard work behind the scenes helped make Cricket Week 2026 such a memorable one.
