Concerto Final Winners 2021
Vivian Kao (Upper Sixth), with her beautiful rendition of Barber’s Violin Concerto, won our recent Concerto Final on Saturday, which took place in front of an external adjudicator and audience. Vivian will perform the Barber with the Symphony Orchestra before the end of the year. In addition, Yufei Zhu (Upper Sixth) was highly commended; she will be offered an opportunity to perform her marimba concerto with a chamber ensemble again at some point this academic year.
As part of the audition, our eight finalists each had to perform a 20 minutes from a concerto with piano accompaniment, having initially made it past the first round of auditions held earlier in Spring when they played 10 minutes from a concerto.
The adjudicator was Armin Zanner who serves as Head of Vocal Studies at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama, where he is also Deputy Director of Music. Armin began his performing life as a violinist and was educated at Selwyn College, Cambridge, where he led the University Musical Society Orchestra. You can find out more about Armin on the Guildhall School website. Our congratulations to both Vivian and Yufei; we look forward to hearing you perform again!
